Description
Although most people think of transportation solely in terms of moving people, it is the movement of goods that connect people with the products they need. These flows of daily commuting passengers and daily delivery of goods coming from the New York Metro Region to Manhattan are the major congestion contributors. In addition, current delivery systems within Manhattan cause local congestion affecting the quality of life for people in the city.
Looking to solve congestion, we are improving the rail system and aiming to take off 52% of all trucks and cars off the roads; providing people time for activities, fast access to goods, a rather walkable city, and public spaces instead of parking lots. Our solution is to re-appropriate the existing passenger lines to accommodate both goods and passengers.
In system A, we are taking advantage of the existing warehouse locations and creating two mega hubs along the rail lines. Goods will be transported from the mega hubs to Penn Station, resulting in Penn Station receiving 282,000 tons of goods per day. In system B, existing subway lines will be used to transport goods from Penn Station to subway station pick-up hubs. The role of Penn Station is altered to relieve congestion, and to improve the quality of life for people in the city.
