Google Fiber
Role: Designer
Type: Retail, Experience Design
Description
As part of a roll-out of a new gigabit broadband service, Google approached our team at Grimshaw to develop a spatial and retail concept strategy that would enable customers to immerse themselves into the Google Fiber service experience.
Five stores, with an additional two additional "lite" versions with a more consolidated footprint, were developed. The design strategy involved addressing and considering how continuity of branding can be established from both a macro architectural scale, to a micro overlay scale.
We were responsible for the design and construction of seven stores : Atlanta, Atlanta Sandy Springs, Charlotte, Durham, Nashville, Raleigh and Salt Lake City. The concept was determined by three elements that were reinforced at each site for continuity.
The insertion of a Google Fiber store in a neighborhood should be an asset for the community. And one of its most important features is the relationship between the interior / exterior spaces. It was encouraged to design exterior spaces like decks, terraces, stepped seating, parklets, etc. and any other similar spaces that allow for an expansion of indoor activities.
The exterior spaces can be used spontaneously or for planned events and can accommodate seating, lighting, shading and other features.
